A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Kick-Ass Social Media Graphics


Did you know that using photos and graphics can significantly boost your Twitter and Facebook engagement?

So, if you’re not using them, you should be! And don’t worry – you don’t have to have design experience to create kick-ass social media graphics that will entice your audience.

It’s as simple as spending a few minutes using Canva, a free graphic design tool. Here’s how:

1. Go to and create a free account.

Once you’ve created your account and logged in, your screen should look something like this:

That’s a LOT of white space at the bottom, huh? Well, once you’ve created a design, that’s where it’ll be located.

From this screen, you can choose any of the options in the “Create a Design” section. As you can see, they’ve got a variety of choices available for all of your social media graphics. For this example, I picked “social media” so I could create a graphic designed to promote a blog post.

2. Pick a layout.

Once you’ve clicked “Social Media,” a new tab will open in your browser – this is the design screen where you’ll make the magic happen! It should look like this at first:

As you can see, the white square is your blank canvas and the left toolbar is where you customize your graphic. First, you’ll need to pick a layout. Click “Layouts” on the far left toolbar, and you’ll see all of your options pop up (as shown in the screenshot above). Pick your favorite!

Tip: Not all of the layouts are free, but don’t worry – plenty of free options are available! Look for a tiny white box that says “FREE” in the bottom right corner of the layout you want.

3. Customize your layout.

For my example, I picked this fancy red layout:

But pick whichever layout you like the most (or – even better – the one you think will resonate best with your target audience!).

Once you’ve picked your layout, you can click on each text area in the post to change the words, move the text box around, or delete it.

I deleted the text and replaced it with mine.

I had to move my text up a bit to get it centered just right.

Once you’ve added your blog post title, it’s a good idea to add your website address and name too.

That way, people immediately know where the post is published and who wrote it.

For this example, I used our tagline and breakline’s web address.

If I wanted to, I could have edited the color of the background or text – pretty much anything I might have wanted to do to make this graphic look unique!

But, I liked it like this, so I went with it.

4. Download and share your graphic.

Once you’re done creating your graphic, all you need to do is download it by clicking the “Download” button at the top right of the screen.

Then, you’ll be presented with a few options:

I chose “Image: high quality (PNG)” and the image started downloading to my computer.

Within a few seconds, the download was complete.

Once the graphic has downloaded, it should be waiting for you in your computer’s “downloads” folder. Grab the graphic and upload it to your social media accounts along with a link to the blog post the graphic is Advertising.

Keep these tips in mind when you share social media graphics:

  • When you post a large image to Twitter, parts of it may be cut off. For best results, make sure your followers can see the title of the blog post on their timeline without needing to click and expand the image.
  • Keep the text on your graphics to a minimum (focus on one key point, like the blog post title), and make sure the text that you do include is easy to read.
  • Brand your graphics whenever possible by adding your logo and using your company colors.

Then, you’re done! See, that wasn’t so painful, was it?
